Using Nutrition to Regain Balance, Energy, and Joy

The number of Americans, including children, diagnosed with depression or anxiety has been on the rise since the 1980’s. This is an increasing and ongoing issue. My class covers what we know about the connections between nutrition and mental health and how to use nutrition to regain balance, energy, and joy.

Fundamentals of Nutrition

When I was a young girl of 49, I thought I knew a lot about nutrition, but until I understood the science behind digestion, hydration, fats and blood sugar regulation, my knowledge (and my healing) was limited. Through this class series, you will learn how applying these fundamentals and eating nutrient-dense, properly prepared real food can give you long-term health and vitality.

This class series includes four sessions and each class offers nutrition ideas to use immediately. Information about your own nutritional needs will also be provided. We can swap recipes and ideas and I provide book recommendations for each topic for further study. With this new knowledge, you can gain a new sense of accomplishment and well-being.

Fundamentals Class 1: Introduction to the NAQ, Nutrition, and Hydration

Before this first class starts, each student will fill out the Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (NAQ), which provides an assessment of individual health priorities. During class, we will go over the NAQ, how it is used and how to read your NAQ report. We will then discuss some of the basic concepts for healthful nutrition and the importance of water for a well-functioning body.

Fundamentals Class 2: Digestion

Digestion is such an important topic for nutrition. Not only is healthy digestion vital for absorbing nutrients, it is also one of the fundamental areas to address for those with any digestive disorders, allergies, immune issues, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular issues, ADD, ADHD, or mood disorders, just to name a few. This class will cover how digestion should work, what can go wrong, and how to improve it.

Fundamentals Class 3: Blood Sugar Regulation

Along with digestion, balancing blood sugar is one of the key foundations of health – especially with the prevalence of high carbohydrate, packaged and convenience foods available today. In this class, we will discuss how the body regulates blood sugar, and what can go wrong with a high-carb diet, and how, what, and when to eat so you can have sustained energy throughout the day.

Fundamentals Class 4: Fats, Cholesterol and Essential Fatty Acids

Misunderstandings about dietary fat abound in our society. In this class, I will give an introduction to fats, cholesterol and Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). We will discuss how the body uses fats, and how to eat to help our bodies heal and stay balanced. If there is time, we can discuss how to eat fat to lose weight!
